How To Play Bass Guitar Scales Beneath Chords
Generally there are two kinds of bass guitar players. The first kind simply plays root notes and a few chords and never really progresses in his bass playing. The second kind knows the right way to correctly use bass scales under chords and has an limitless selection of new elements to play. Which type of bass player?
If you play bass guitar you are familiar with playing the root note of what ever guitar chord the guitar player is performing. You additionally may have learned how to play the triads; or the 3 notes that make up the guitar chord the guitar player is playing. Learning and utilizing these things is OK but they just scratch the surface of what really proficient bassists do which would be to play bass scales under guitar chords.
If you are playing three note chords,or triads, you're really playing parts of either a major or a minor scale. These two scales are a excellent place to begin. Remember that while a song could be in the key of G, once the band changes to the C chord you need to be playing a C scale, either major or minor, not still playing a G scale. Even though the notes are almost all the same, the secret in this is to at least start thinking in scales per chord.
It might be simpler to think only about five note scales at first. These are known as pentatonic scales. There is a pentatonic major and a pentatonic minor scale. The pentatonic scales include the three notes that make up the chord plus two additional notes. When the middle note within the chord is a major note you are playing the major pentatonic scale, when the middle note is a minor note you are playing the minor pentatonic scale. Also, you can utilize the minor pentatonic scale under 7th chords, but I will get into that in another article.
Let me offer you a good example. The electric guitar player is playing a C major chord. These notes are C, E, and G. A suitable pentatonic scale to use below this chord is most likely the major which is C, D, E, G. A. Just five notes. If your guitar player is playing a C minor chord which happens to be C, E flat, and G; you would probably play the minor pentatonic scale and that's C, E flat, F, G, and B flat.
When you have mastered each of the common pentatonic scales, the next thing with your playing is to master both the complete major scale and the full minor scale. Each of these scales will usually sound correct below specific chords. Always remember that when you use pentatonic scales, it does not matter exactly what key the song is in, only what chord is being played at that time, which always determines which scale you need to be playing.
Try using these kind of simple scales below guitar chords when you perform and you should come to discover almost endless new possibilities for your bass guitar playing.
